Anyone who believes that exponential growth can go on forever in a finite world is either a madman or an economist.
Kenneth E. Boulding
Advanced Motors
SEMA electric motor for electric and hybrid vehicles - A new type of highly effcient eletric motor with high power to weight ratio which may find applications in electric drive vehicles. (Viewed 11/29/2006)
Howstuffworks article on Quasiturbine internal combustion engine - The quasiturbine is a new type of internal combustion engine which has the potential to acheive much higher efficiencies and power to weight ratio than traditional designs. Only reasearch prototypes are avaialable to date. This article gives a good description of the principles of operation inclulding some nice aninmations. The inventors's website (see below) is also worth checking out.  (Viewed 11/29/2006)
Quasi Turbine website - Website of the Saint-Hilaire family who take co-credit for development of the quasiturbine. They understand very well that current levels of energy and resource consumption in the developing world are not sustainable. (Viewd 11/29/2006)
Water Transportation
IRPT estimate of barge transport energy efficiency - Inland Rivers, Ports, and Terminals, Inc. estimate of energy efficiency of barge transportation compared to trucks and rail roads. They claim that barges are the most energy efficient means of freight transport.
Lighter Than Air Transport
Links to Helium Airship Manufacturers - Recent advances in lighter than air technology have a flurry of development activity in this transportatin technology. The capital costs are far below those of heavy than aircraft and the fuel efficiency is much higher. The enormous infracstructure costs of airports are not required for this means of air transport. If thin film PV cells become cheap enough then solar powered flight is a possiblity. Some developers are also working on hybrid aircraft which combine aerodynamic lift with helium flotation.
Fuel Efficient Automobiles
Loremo AG - A small, lighweight, aerodynamic car desiged to get 157miles/gallon (67km/liter) using a 20 horsepower diesel engine. The target for mass prodution and sales (in Europe) is 2009. The intended price is 11,000 Euros. (Viewed 11/29/2006)
The real science of political economy, which has yet to be distinguished from the bastard science, as medicine from witchcraft, and astronomy from astrology, is that which teaches nations to desire and labor for the things that lead to life; and which teaches them to scorn and destroy the things which lead to destruction.
John Ruskin
Roger Brown
